Did you know that garden fairies love to take care of hummingbirds? It's true! These tiny, fluttery fairies sprinkle sunshine magic on the flowers each morning to make sure there's plenty of sweet nectar for their hummingbird friends. When a hummingbird zips by with a twinkle and a hum, it’s often following a fairy’s giggle through the blossoms. Some say if you’re very still and very kind, you might just spot a fairy riding on a hummingbird’s back, guiding it to the brightest bloom in the garden!

Steps to Create Your Own Backyard Fairyland

For the Bird Feeder

Step 1: Choose Your Magical Bloom Companions

Plant flowers that hummingbirds adore and that bring fantasy vibes to your space. These are some fairy-favorite ideas for your garden!

  • Bee Balm (Monarda)

Bee balm loves the sun! Plant it in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, and keep the soil moist but well-drained. It spreads easily, so give it some space—or contain it with edging if needed. Cut it back after blooming to encourage a second flush of flowers.

  • Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans)

Trumpet vine thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It’s a fast grower so give it plenty of space and a strong support like a trellis or fence. Prune it back in late winter to control its size and shape, as it can become quite vigorous. Hummingbirds love its bright, trumpet-shaped blooms!

  • Columbine (Aquilegia)

  • Columbine thrives in part sun to light shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly, especially in dry spells, but avoid soggy conditions. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers, and let some go to seed if you'd like them to self-sow. Their delicate, nodding blossoms are favorites of hummingbirds and look like something plucked straight from a fairy tale!

  • Fuchsia

Fuchsias prefer bright, indirect light and cool temperatures. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, and be sure to water more often in warm weather. They love humidity and appreciate regular misting. Pinch back the tips to encourage bushier growth and more blooms—perfect for trailing fairy gardens and hanging baskets!

Pro Tip: Group your blooms in patches of color for a bigger visual impact (and easier bird spotting!).

Step 2: Mix Your Hummingbird Nectar

Homemade nectar is simple, safe, and far more magical than store-bought.

Fairy Nectar Recipe

  • 1 part white sugar
  • 4 parts warm water

Dissolve the sugar completely, then let it cool. WARNING! Never use red dye. It’s harmful to birds.

Step 3: Craft Your Enchanted Hummingbird Feeder

  1. Decorate your jar or bottle with red accents — a painted ring around the top, or a red ribbon just below the lid (red attracts hummingbirds).
  2. Poke a small hole in the center of the lid. If using a cork top, carve a small hole carefully.
  3. Glue a silk flower and a tiny charm near the opening to add a whimsical touch.
  4. Wrap twine around the top to create a sturdy loop for hanging.
  5. Fill with nectar, tighten the lid, and hang it in a shady spot near your magical flowers.

Add More Whimsy

Create extra magic by hanging tiny wind chimes for soft fairy music, painting glow-in-the-dark rocks, and making a fairy welcome sign from wood slices or twigs.

With just a few supplies and a bit of intention, you can create a space where nature and imagination meet.🧚‍♀️ Tag your garden photos on Instagram with #BugBeanGardenMagic
